These sweets with pumpkin derive from the exquisite claustral tradition, a tradition that was created to support the convents – as pastries represented a source of income – and which has become a cornerstone of Sicilian confectionery art.
Muccunetti, sweets prepared with simple, local ingredients such as pumpkin, almonds, sugar and eggs, were also prepared by the Benedictine nuns of the convent of San Michele in Mazara del Vallo for this purpose. Their appearance was made even more graceful and exquisite by the tissue paper wrapping that made them look like sweeties.
And in this guise, you can find and buy them at the convent itself or in local bakeries.
