Church of Santa Maria di Gesù
Trapani
This church is an interesting example of Renaissance religious architecture, with its façade made of tuff ashlars, its elegant details and the ogival portal surmounted by a shell-shaped niche. The portal on the right side is another example of this style, with an interesting relief of an Annunciation (15th century).
The church was built in the first half of the 16th century and it has three naves. It is characterized by simplicity, even if it is embellished by very valuable details: the trussed ceiling in the nave shows traces of paintings and inscriptions and the ribbed vaults define the apse and the presbytery.
At the end of the right aisle there is the Staiti chapel, full of masterpieces, where there is the sarcophagus with the Gaginian relief of San Girolamo of one of the exponents of this family, Iacopo. The chapel houses the Madonna of the angels, a polychrome glazed terracotta by Andrea della Robbia (XV century) and a marble canopy by Antonello Gagini (1521).
