Church and Convent of San Domenico
Trapani
The origins of this church date back to the thirteenth century – renovated over the centuries – and are connected both to the return from the Crusades of the Dominican fathers and to the will of James of Aragon to have this place of worship built on the only hillock in the area where the historic centre of Trapani develops.
The rose window in Gothic-Chiaramonte style and the apse date back to the most ancient phases, while its octagonal-based bell tower dates back to the 15th century. It is a real church-mausoleum of eminent dignitaries of the Aragonese lineage, but the church also houses the “Crusaders’ Chapel” with frescoes of the XIV and XV centuries, and preserves precious works of art such as a wooden Crucifix of the second half of the XIV century.
The Convent, which is spread over two levels and with two beautiful cloisters with round arches, was renovated after 1866, with the transfer of ecclesiastical property to the State.
