The church and the convent of the Franciscan Friars Minor date back to 1364. The foundation bull of the convent was issued by Pope Urban V on August 22, 1362 in Avignon. Starting from the 17th century, the convent was enlarged and renovated. The collapse of the nave caused the church to be closed to worship in 1927 and subjected to a series of restorations in the 1970s. 

From 1911 the whole conventual structure became seat of the civic hospital, while from 1975 it is one of the seats of the Foundation “Ettore Maiorana” called Institute Wigner-San Francesco.
