Nature Reserve of Lo Stagnone
A natural paradise waiting to be discovered
Lo Stagnone is a nature reserve located in Marsala. Its ecological and historical significance has made it a unique example of balance between sustainable development and environmental protection.
With the Egadi Islands on the horizon, the reserve is distinguished by the presence of a large lagoon with pink waters, delimited by the natural barrier of Isola Grande or Longa. Three small islets, Mozia, Santa Maria, and Schola, contribute to making the surrounding atmosphere even more charming, along with the salt heaps and mills with the characteristic red roofs of the Marsala Salt Pans.
Born 4000 years ago as an important commercial port, today Lo Stagnone is a true and uncontaminated natural paradise, characterized by its rare brackish ecosystem, as well as a great variety of protected species among animals and plants. From fish species like red mullets and crustaceans to plant species like reeds and rushes, to water birds like ducks and herons. In particular, the sight of pink flamingos is greatly admired, attracted by the climate of the western coast of Sicily during the migratory flows that occur in spring and autumn. In their long journeys, to and from North Africa, it is possible to see them stop right in the reserve, where they find ideal conditions for breeding and feeding, such as brackish water and the microorganisms crucial for their sustenance.
The reserve and the surrounding areas offer a wide range of activities for outdoor sports enthusiasts, including birdwatching, trekking, fishing tourism, boat excursions, canoeing, sailing, kitesurfing, and windsurfing. Kiteboarding among the salt pans, with the windmills on the horizon and the backdrop of a breathtaking sunset, is an unforgettable experience that you shouldn’t miss.
But the Stagnone Reserve also offers educational activities designed for children! Here, you can not only book guided tours to discover the history and biodiversity of the reserve but also ride a bike along a bike path with an itinerary accessible to all.
The Stagnone Nature Reserve is a must-visit for nature lovers looking for a unique experience in discovering Western Sicily.
