Episcopal Palace
Mazara del Vallo
The Bishop’s Palace was the residence of the famous Chiaramonte family. At that time it was enriched by mullioned windows and a wooden ceiling now visible in a room. The palace was transformed in 1583 in the bishop’s seat and was connected in 1654 to the Cathedral through an open gallery crowned by an entablature. The palace was restored in the eighteenth century and is surrounded by a garden. The facade was redone in the nineteenth century, and has a large portal with four elegant columns. The rooms are developed around a large courtyard and have coffered ceilings and eighteenth-century pictorial decorations, including the three Magi by D. La Bruna. The walls are decorated with portraits of the bishops of Mazara who took turns from 1097. A beautiful wrought iron grating was built on the high level of the loggia, accessible by the nuns who lived in the adjacent Monastery of St. Catherine.
