Oriented Nature Reserve of Lo Zingaro
Castellammare del Golfo
From the locations of Scopello and San Vito lo Capo, you can access the Zingaro Nature Reserve, the first natural area in Italy transformed into a reserve, thanks to the efforts of hundreds of citizens. The magnificent reserve extends for over seven kilometers and is among the most fascinating and characteristic in all of Sicily, and one of the most beautiful reserves in Italy. An exceptional example of terrestrial and marine biodiversity with seven hundred species of plants and various animal species, it can be visited by choosing from three different paths, at different elevations and with progressively increasing levels of difficulty. Among Mediterranean vegetation and splendid coves leading to crystal-clear azure waters, the reserve still maintains a wild and spontaneous appearance today, albeit enriched with appropriate signage, rest areas, and points of interest, including two defensive towers dating back to the 16th century. Choosing the mid-coastal path, it takes about four hours to traverse the entire reserve, enjoying breathtaking views, landscapes characterized by dwarf palms, olive trees, almond trees, carob trees, and bushes. This biodiversity offers a panorama of typical colors and scents. Many animals inhabit the reserve, including birds such as barn owls, owls, robins, and shrews; occasionally, the Bonelli’s eagle, typical of the area, can be spotted. The rocky limestone coast forms welcoming coves, each with different characteristics. From the sea, you can also reach some submerged caves. Continuing along the mid-coastal path, traveling two kilometers uphill from Scopello, you will find the Borgo Cusenza and Contrada Sughero, which should not be missed.
