Church of the Souls in Purgatory
Castellammare del Golfo
The church, also dedicated to Santa Lucia, was built in the early 1600s during the town’s expansion, in front of the warehouse where some grain pits, a drinking water fountain, and various facilities such as the medical office, notary’s office, a bakery, and several shops were located. Its current appearance dates back to the 18th century, starting with its neoclassical facade. Thanks to the involvement of various congregations, including that of the sailors, the church was adorned with decorations and paintings. The main altar is embellished with an altarpiece depicting the souls in purgatory, St. Joseph, and the Holy Trinity. A large arch, supported by pillars, separates the choir, and lateral arches distinguish the side openings. In the center of the floor, through a trapdoor, there is access to a crypt.
