Sicilian wines and typical dishes: 5 combinations to try

A trip to western Sicily is an unforgettable experience from many points of view.

Not only for its sea and landscapes. Not only for the art and culture that permeate every place on the island. But also for its gastronomic and wine tradition.

This area boasts in fact a wide variety of vines, both white and black, which produce wines of the highest quality.
If you are planning a holiday in Sicily, you absolutely must experience this adventure by accompanying every dish you eat with a good glass of wine!

5 combinations to try at least once in your life

Bluefin tuna, the most prestigious of the tuna species, especially when grilled or in sweet and sour sauce, deserves to be accompanied by a Catarratto: a wine with floral tones, fresh and fruity.

Busiate with Trapanese pesto: tomato, garlic, basil, almonds and olive oil. Simple ingredients that result in one of the most delicious traditional Sicilian dishes. The ideal match? A Nero d’Avola!

His majesty the Red shrimp (Gambero rosso), appreciated all over the world and fished only here, which can also be enjoyed raw: we suggest trying it with a Grillo, a grape variety that produces wines with a savoury taste, citrus notes and floral aromas.

One of the protagonists of Sicilian pastry, the cannolo, deserves a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its precious nectar: Zibibbo, also known as Moscato of Pantelleria.

And finally, the only Italian PDO spun paste cheese of ovine origin, as well as a Slow Food presidium: the vastedda, made from Belice sheep’s milk, to be enjoyed with a Frappato. This is a robust and strong wine with a sparkling red colour and a fruity aroma.
