San Giuseppe - Custonaci
- 27/04/2022
The festivities in honour of San Giuseppe (Saint Joseph) are celebrated at the end of April and conclude on 1 May. The tradition of the feast in honour of the saint originated in the hamlet of Sperone in the 19th century, under the impetus of the Basiricò family who escaped an earthquake and lightning strike and started the tradition of “inviting” San Giuseppe. This is the cornerstone of the popular tradition linked to this feast, as families prepare a votive altar to the saint with the traditional bread of San Giuseppe and set a table for three to symbolise the Holy Family, with food provided for the most vulnerable in society.
Children dressed as angels taste the dishes served to the Holy Family to the tune of a musical band.
On the same day, the sacrifice of the many marble workers who lost their lives in the quarries is also commemorated in Piazza Europa.
An open-air mass is celebrated on 1 May and a procession moves through the streets of the districts to the Sanctuary, returning to the church of the saint.
The festival concludes with fireworks.
