This ancient red grape variety, native to Sicily, has roots in the eastern part of the island, but is increasingly being cultivated in the vineyards on the sandy soils of the west.
Its light red-coloured grapes form a moderately long cluster with compact, oblong-shaped berries. It is harvested in mid to late October, as it is a late-ripening variety. This variety produces wines with a high alcohol content (13-14°) that are suitable for ageing.
