Erice
It almost seems to take a trip back in time when you arrive in the village (which can also be reached by a scenic cable car). You will discover a medieval town, with cobbled streets, forming almost carpets, ancient historical buildings, some tiny streets, called vanedde, where you pass one at a time.
There are many buildings of great historical and artistic value in Erice, already a very important political center Elymian in Antiquity – the indigenous population that inhabited this area – whose importance is closely linked to its strategic position, is perfectly expressed by the monument symbol of Erice, the Castle of Venus.
A centre that gives precious cultural surprises, such as the sculptural works of the great Renaissance artist Antonello Gagini and his workshop, located in ecclesiastical buildings or at the Polo Museale “A. Cordici”. Erice also amazes for its exceptional nature: paths to be explored among the foliage of Mediterranean pines and eucalyptus trees, cavities and caves full of history and charm in a landscape and a unique territory that combines in a blink of an eye the green crags of the mountain, the blue of the sea and sky, where the horizon stretches wide and bright.
And yet you can not leave Erice before having tasted the “sweets of badia“, a unique tradition of these parts, still alive today after centuries. These are sweets made with almonds that once, supposedly since the Middle Ages, were prepared by the nuns inside the convents (badia stands for convent).
Finally, having been built on the highest point of the mountain, from Erice you can enjoy an unparalleled view even looking outside. Through the ancient walls, you can admire a breathtaking view that goes from the sea of the islands of Mozia and Egadi up to the reliefs of the Belice Valley.
