Church of St. Giovanni Battista

Church of St. Giovanni Battista Church of St. Giovanni Battista
This church probably dating from the twelfth century, with its enviable panoramic position facing Mount Hood, is an iconic element of the monumental landscape ericino.

It was the seat of one of the three great brotherhoods of Erice.

Its unmistakable mammelliform dome stands out among the green of the leafy tops of the trees of the garden that surrounds it and the blue of the sky and the sea on the horizon. The building has undergone many changes and enlargements, such as the one in 1631, while the stuccoes decorating the altars date back to the 18th century.  Inside the church there are some masterpieces of the Sicilian Renaissance sculpture, such as the group of the Visitation, by Gabriele di Battista, dated 1497, the Acquasantiera and the San Giovanni Battista by Antonio Gagini and the San Giovanni Evangelista by the great Antonello Gagini.
