Cala Minnolla

The depths of the Egadi are themselves an underwater archaeological park.

Between Cala Minnola and Punta Altarella, between 27 and 30 meters deep, there is an underwater archaeological itinerary in which it is possible to admire a series of wine amphorae and ceramic fragments from the 1st century BC.

In the small bay of Cala Minnola, in the south-eastern side of the island, the sea takes on different shades of green and blue and it is possible to see in its depths archaeological finds dating back to the Punic Wars. From its depths have been recovered by the archaeologist Sebastiano Tusa about 20 rostrums of ships and as many helmets and swords, testimonies so relevant as to have recognized in this place what was the scene of the First Punic War.  

Near Cala Minnola, moreover, there are the remains of one of the best preserved fish processing plants in Sicily. These are quadrangular tanks lined with earthenware for the production of garum – Roman condiment of liquid sauce and fish entrails – dated between the Republican and Imperial Roman Age (III-I BC – II AD).
