The "Matrici"

The "Matrici" The "Matrici"
The Mother Church, called “La Matrici,” is dedicated to the patron saint SS. Maria del Soccorso. In 1726, it was commissioned by the Prince of Aragon and designed by Giuseppe Mariani. The church is located in the heart of the historic center, on a rocky outcrop at the edge of the defensive walls. The facade is simple and elegant in neoclassical style. The interior is laid out in three naves, with a Latin cross plan. The main altar is surmounted by a fine wooden crucifix, and inside is the statue of the Madonna, dating back to the mid-1500s.

The church is adorned with stuccoes, frescoes, and polychrome marbles that still reflect the Sicilian Baroque style. An fresco attributed to Velázquez is found on the choir vault, depicting the narrative of the Old and New Testaments.
