The Cretto is a symbol of memory, an imposing white concrete expanse covering 85,000 square metres.
The Cretto is a monumental memorial designed by Alberto Burri (Città di Castello, 1915 – Nice, 1995), an internationally renowned artist, exponent of informal art and creator of tangible and material works with a strong emotional impact.
Covering an area of 85,000 square metres, this dazzling and impressive expanse of white concrete – resembling a shroud – rests on the hillside and blankets the ruins of the village, in collective memory.
The artist buried the rubble of the village in the concrete, creating an evocative labyrinth of lanes that evokes the street layout of the destroyed settlement.
This impressive work of Land Art is fully connected with nature and has a strong emotional impact: viewing it from a distance is a must. In this gigantic work of art, whose white colour contrasts with the green of the fertile hillside vineyards – which in the Middle Ages were part of the Busecchio fief – you can walk along the steep and repetitive passages in the silence of the landscape
