Castles
With a history that probably dates back to the First Punic War, the Colombaia Castle is a fascinating fortress surrounded by the sea, which stands on a small island at the eastern end of the port, part of an imposing and necessary defensive apparatus, as indicated by its octagonal tower incorporated in the fifteenth-century fortress.
Under Charles V the castle defended the inhabited centre from the raids of the pirates, in Bourbon epoch, almost up to the thresholds of the Reign of Italy, the Colombaia was destined to the jails and such destination of use lasted up to the sixties of the XX century.
