Carnival holidays in western Sicily

Considered to be among the most beautiful in Italy, Carnival in western Sicily has always been renowned for its folklore-related events. On this occasion, the streets of towns and small villages become alive with costumes, parades and typical local dishes.

Every year, allegorical floats with giant papier-mâché figures bring satire and traditional local characters to life. During your holidays, in fact, you may come across the most famous Sicilian masks, such as ‘Lu Nannu‘ and ‘La Nanna‘ (grandfather and grandmother): an elderly couple represented in a grotesque style, accompanied by secondary characters such as ‘u Dutturi‘ (man of science), ‘u Baruni‘ (man of power) and ‘u Nutaru‘ (man of law). These stereotypes of society are ridiculed by ‘u Nannu’ who, during the parade, expresses his discontent with them in provocative tones and strictly in dialect. But, alongside the more classic masks, there is no shortage of references to politics and the news, told with the irony that characterises this area of Sicily.

After all, the very essence of Sicilian Carnival is popular and the streets have always been the stage for this spectacle of colours, costumes and lightheartedness.

But, as you know, every celebration in Sicily is also a perfect excuse to enjoy traditional pastries.

During your trip, let yourself be seduced by pistachio chiacchiere, cassatelle and castagnole (filled with ricotta, of course)! These unique delicacies are especially popular on Sicilian tables at this time of year.
