The Val di Mazara and Islamic culture

Spring Holidays

EXPLORE

Due to its proximity to Ifriqiya, the Val di Mazara has been closely linked to the cultures of the Maghreb since before the Islamic invasion. As a result, the influence of Islamic artistic culture on its art and architecture is more evident here than in any other area of Sicily.

  • In Mazara del Vallo, don’t miss the Arco Normanno (Norman Arch), the Churches of SS. Salvatore and San Nicolò Lo Regale and a walk in the Medina
  • In Salemi, where the urban layout in certain districts is shaped by Islamic culture, don’t miss the Arab-Norman castle
  • In the Archaeological Park of Segesta, look for the remains of the Mosque
