Arches, towers, walls and doors
From its terrace the “torrari” (military men who guarded the tower) could easily communicate with the “tonnare” (tuna factories) of Bonagia and Monte San Giuliano, important places of production for the local economy that had to be protected.
Created to defend the tonnara of the same name, the Torre di Cofano (today used as a visitor centre) dates back to the beginning of the 16th century and is characterised by its four-pointed star-shaped plan.
A Marian sanctuary that guards a painting attributed to the school of Antonello da Messina, a troglodyte village where every Christmas the most evocative living nativity in Sicily comes to life, the Monte Cofano Nature Reserve and a hundred marble quarries. Custonaci is intimate, devoted western Sicily.
