Piazza Dittatura and Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall)
Salemi’s main square takes its name from the “dictatorship” declared by Garibaldi on 14 May 1860, in the name of Victor Emmanuel II.
From the Palazzo Comunale, Garibaldi declared Salemi the first capital of Italy, and a plaque in the square commemorates this event.
Overlooking this square is the Palazzo Comunale, a palimpsest of different historical periods. On its facade is the coat of arms of Salemi, with its crowned eagle bearing on its breast a shield emblazoned with the castle, and in its entrance courtyard are busts of Garibaldi and Crispi.
