Museum of the Satyr
The Museum is located within a prestigious historical building, itself evidence of the ancient history of Mazara del Vallo: the Church of Sant’Egidio, property of the Brotherhood founded in 1384.
The museum preserves archaeological relicts of the territory including several commercial amphorae and objects related to maritime trade that have always characterized Mazara. The finding that gives the name to the museum is extraordinary: an exceptional bronze and lead statue, dating back to the Hellenistic age, portraying a satyr performing a perpetual turn in a wild dance, which was found in the Sicilian Channel by local fishermen in the late ’90s.
