Church of Our Lady of the Stairs

Church of Our Lady of the Stairs Church of Our Lady of the Stairs
Near the port, on a small hill downstream from Belvedere, the Church of Our Lady of the Scala was built in the 17th century.

Its construction is linked to a legend. On September 7, 1641, a maiden named Maria d’Angelo, while grazing her flock, found herself in the midst of a sudden storm. She took shelter and there discovered a copper box, at which point the storm immediately ceased.

Inside, she found a reliquary, a silver cross, some gems, and an image of the Madonna with the Child. The church was then built at the discovery site and was called “della scala” due to the steep terrain, where a wooden staircase is now in place for access.

On September 8, a procession takes place here, and in Piazza Porta Fraginesi, a celebratory lunch is shared, featuring “li tagghiarini,” pasta seasoned with fava beans.
